School Reform Activists Face Growing Opposition Across India
Tensions in India have mounted after the killing of 51-year-old Mohammad Mafik, whose son Abdul Hafeez, a part of the activist organization Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), was beaten up after visiting an underperforming government school in Bankura district of West Bengal. CJP, which has recently earned national attention due to its role in making Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan quit owing to Gen Z-based protests, has initiated a "Fix the Schools" campaign, where they have asked people to visit poorly funded government schools all over the country. Even amid violence and newly imposed government restrictions in BJP governed states like Rajasthan, CJP says that nothing can stop them from asking for education reform.
